The kabasa usually consists of a round wheel or cylinder (usually wooden) looped together with a chain of steel beads to produce a swish sound when the instrument is shaken.
The cabasa is made from a small gourd encased in shells, and the sound is produced by banging the body of the gourd against the outer encased shell.
The kabasa can be played in the following three ways:
The right hand holds the handle of the instrument, the left hand cups the underside of the instrument, and the right hand twists back and forth to make it rub to produce sound;
Holding the handle of the instrument in the right hand and rocking it back and forth;
Holding the handle of the instrument in the right hand and tossing it back and forth in a semi-suspended position.
The sound of the cabasa can be adjusted by changing the length and weight of the chain of steel beads, and the player can create a variety of rhythmic effects through the coordination of the right and left hands. The cabasa is suitable for beginning musicians, and professional percussionists can make the cabasa sound wonderful and create various rhythmic effects with it.
